Class Dojo

I decided to add Class Dojo to my list of top ten tools for elementary teachers when I presented at TIES, and I'm so glad I did. Not only did we have a great discussion about the tool in class - and most of those in the room had not heard of it - it was also brought up in several other sessions during the conference.

Class Dojo (http://www.classdojo.com) is an easy and fun-to-use tool for monitoring and rewarding classroom behavior. Registration is free and the tool can be accessed through the Internet on your computer, in the app on an iPad or Droid device, or through the Google Apps interface. The initial setup for your class is easy - simply upload your class list or type their names in individually.

Once you've set Class Dojo up you can use it immediately. It was fun to hear the teachers in different situations explaining how they used it:

  • A special ed teacher uses it in small groups to monitor behavior
  • A classroom teacher explained how she projected it onto her whiteboard, set a class goal for earning points, and then had the students go up to the board and actually click on their avatar to add a point for the group.
  •  Another classroom teacher uses it for attendance as well as behavior.
  • Many teachers talked about the reports they were able to either print out or email out to parents.
  • Several teachers mentioned that the data they were able to keep on student behaviors was very helpful when it came to meeting with parents at conference time.
  • A media specialist told me that she and the other specialists in the school created class lists for every class they taught and as each one walked in they pulled up the class and began monitoring. They felt it helped them to be more consistent with all students.
In addition to providing teacher access there are parent and student log-ins as well, so students can do some personal managing of their own behavior goals, but could also create their own avatar and even "purchase" accessories with the points they earned.
