The Orphan Train

I wanted to share some great resources on the Orphan Train with you. Our fourth graders enjoy this historical unit, and one great addition has been the presenters we've been fortunate to host. Last year's speaker was the grandmother (in-law) of one of teachers, who was actually a child on the Orphan Train. This year our speaker is the daughter of one of the children on the Orphan Train. These personal accounts are very meaningful! In addition to that, however, there are some wonderful Internet resources: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/orphan/ This is the PBS American Experience: The Orphan Train website. It includes a teacher's guide, as well as video clips with personal accounts. http://orphantraindepot.org The National Orphan Train Complex holds the information from the museum which is dedicated to the preservation of the stories and artifacts of those who were part of the Orphan Train Movement from 1854 - 1929. http://www.childrensaidsociety.org/about/history/orphan-trains Information from the Children's Aid Society http://www.ridersontheorphantrain.org Riders on the Orphan Train is the official outreach program of the National Orphan Train Complex.
